26 - 27 October 2026

Introduction

The 12th European Conference on Wood Modification (ECWM12) will take place in Dresden, Germany, on 26-27 October 2026.

The conference will be hosted at the Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden gGmbH (IHD), Zellescher Weg 24, 01217 Dresden, Germany.

ECWM conferences provide a forum for research organisations and companies, as well as stakeholders, architects, and project managers to learn about the latest developments in wood modification, to discuss them with renowned experts and to build networks in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

All types of wood modification are covered- This includes thermal, chemical or impregnation modification, as well as related technologies, such as microwave, plasma and enzymatic modification. The programme will also include testing methods and standards, environmental issues, quality control and aspects of commercialisation and markets.

The conference programme is arranged by the scientific committee.

ECWM conferences were established in 2003 (Ghent), and in the same year, the European TMT Workshops were started in Dresden, organised by IHD. Both conferences have been successful, but there have always been some overlaps. Now, as part of ECWM12, the TMT Workshop series will be integrated into ECWM.

We look forward to welcoming you in Dresden:
Holger Militz (Chair of Scientific Committee) and
Wolfram Scheiding (Local Organizing Committee)

Abstract and Paper Submission

Special journal issue

As with some further ECWM conferences, there will be an opportunity to publish the paper manuscript in a scientific journal. It is planned to publish a special issue of the International Wood Products Journal (ed. Dennis Jones), including full papers as well as brief originals (technical notes). Following the conference, the scientific committee will select conference papers, which will be then peer-reviewed. There is no guarantee that a manuscript will be taken up into the journals special issue.
For the journal, the 4 pages manuscript of speakers with posters might be selected only for a brief original. To get a chance to be selected for a full journal paper, speakers with posters must also submit an 8 pages manuscript.
Irrespective of the type of paper, it must be ensured that the paper was not already published elsewhere.

NOTE: For any correspondence with the local organisers, please include “ECWM12” in the subject line.

Presentations and Posters

Presentations

Please prepare your presentation as PowerPoint file (alternatively PDF). For the file name please use the number of your paper/poster (you find it in the programme) and your surname, e.g. “1.1_Duarte”. This would be very helpful for us.
According to the screen of the conference room, the preferred slide format is widescreen (16:9).
When preparing your presentation, please consider the available speaking time (15 min for full papers, 3 min for posters). Please note that the PowerPoint presenter view will not be available.
If possible, please send the file prior to the conference via email to amelie.neugebauer@ihd-dresden.de, to avoid time pressure at the conference.
Otherwise, bring the file on an USB stick and hand it over to our staff at the desk. In this case, please turn to the desk in time, i.e. in the morning before the start or latest in the break prior to your session.

Posters

Please bring your posters as printed copy in A1 format (acc. to ISO 216), i.e. 594 mm x 841 mm.
Please include the number of your poster, e.g. “3.1” (you find it in the programme) in the headline, to make sure it is hanging in the right place.
Material to fix your poster at the poster stand will be available on site.

Book of Abstracts and Proceedings

The book of abstracts will be handed out as brochure at the conference. The proceedings will be provided to the participants after the conference as PDF document for free download.
